Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce at Larkhall Academy

In January 2013, the Scottish Government set up The Commission for Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce (DSYW). This commission was chaired by Sir Ian Wood and was tasked with providing recommendations designed to ensure that Scotland is producing better qualified, work ready and motivated young people with skills relevant to modern employment opportunities.

The report also focused on pupils who didn’t follow an academic pathway and who leave school without Highers and the important role and value vocational education plays in the Scottish education system.

Here at Larkhall Academy we have an ever-expanding range of pathway and opportunities for pupils to help develop their skills for learning, life and work:

Broad General Education Opportunities for S1-S3:

Skills for Learning, Life and Work Events

  • A range of workshops, presentations and activities to challenge pupils’ perceptions of skills and careers

STEM Events

  • A range of workshops, presentations and activities to develop pupils’ understanding of careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

Diversity Events

  • A range of presentations to increase pupils’ awareness of equal opportunities for all

Skills Development Scotland Input

  • Lessons delivered by dedicated Careers Advisors to develop pupils’ awareness and understanding of the Careers Education Standard and Careers Management Skills using the My World of Work Portal

The Machan Trust Input

  • Lessons delivered by youth workers from The Machan Trust to help develop pupils’ confidence, self-esteem and communication skills

Senior Phase Opportunities for S4-S6:

Flexible Work Placements

  • A wide range of local employers and volunteer agencies offer our senior pupils work placements which can be incorporated as part of their timetable

Youth Learning Services

  • A range of vocational and personal development courses are offered in the local which focus on developing pupils’ confidence and employability skills.

College Placements at New College Lanarkshire

  • Vocational courses are offered for our S4 pupils in: Construction, Engineering, Hair and Beauty, Care. Pupils attend one day per week as part of their timetable, with transport provided by the school

Foundation Apprenticeships

  • Vocational Courses are offered to selected S5/6 pupils.

Global Business Links

  • A number of international companies offer enhanced input to a range of our departments to assist our pupils in developing their understanding of career progression. These include: HSBC, First Direct, Coca Cola, Borders Biscuits, JP Morgan…

Inspiring Enterprise Challenge

  • Each year, a number of pupils represent the school at South Lanarkshire’s ‘Inspiring Enterprise Challenge’ summer programme. This is a unique opportunity for pupils to develop their business skills by experiencing the world of work first hand at a number of high profile companies.

S4 Alternative Curriculum

  • Enhanced provision is available for selected S4 pupils through the school’s DYW provision. Timetables are arranged on a bespoke basis and may include a combination of: Work Placement, Small Group Tuition, College, Youth Learning Services provision, Volunteering.

Aspire Input

  • Additional one-to-one support is available for pupils who require assistance in progressing to a sustainable positive destination after they have completed their school studies.

Trips and Excursions

A range of school trips with an employability focus take place throughout the school year. This session, this has included visits to:

  • Scottish Apprenticeship Show
  • Queensferry Bridge
  • National Museum of Scotland
  • Glasgow Science Centre
  • Glasgow University
  • Strathclyde University
